For six hundred and eight Turns of the Bell-Reckoning, no mortal living on the crescent continent of Kaelvorn had ever experienced true silence. Beneath the soles of your boots on the bronze-inlaid Resonant Roads, in the timber rafters of Root-Cradle, and along the foundry docks of Brass-Harbor, a comforting, sub-audible chord always hummed through the earth. That planetary music came from the Chime-Spires—the colossal towers raised by the Seven Architects to shake the heavy daylight of the Canopy loose into gentle warmth and fertile soil.
Then came mid-summer noon in 609 FS.
For ten terrifying seconds, the hum stopped. Across the entire continent, birds dropped from the sky, forge-fires froze mid-flicker, and the waves of the Churn stood like walls of dark glass. When sound returned, it was not a bell—it was a reverse waterfall of silver-white light tearing through the roof of Sol-Vara, the First Spire at the center of the world. The mute bell-monks known as the Listeners vanished inside the crater, and in their place marched the first silent cohorts of the Vitrified.
Today, in 612 FS, three Turns have passed since the Cracking. For too long, the leaders of the Solaris Bastion, the Iron-Chime Syndicate, and the Verdant Chorus told their citizens that the Pale Wake was contained inside the central highland now called the Shattered Crown. They were wrong. Two Turns ago, a smuggled Spire-shard dropped by Red-Sail Corsairs glassed a winter oasis in the Singing Dunes of Kal-Zir, and parasitic crystal vines began choking Spire Verdan in the Whispering Fen. Both disasters were quietly filed away as local accidents.
Three months ago, the border spires slipped out of tune, and silver fissures began crawling south along the bronze ley-conduits. Only three great regional towers still hold the continental grid together: Spire Aethel above High Solitude, Spire Verdan in the Fen, and Spire Caul beside Brass-Harbor. If all three lock to the frequency of the Pale Wake, the very towers built to keep our cities alive will become emitters of The Stilling.
That is why the three factions have linked their war-camps at Last Accord and sounded the Call of the Unbroken. As an Oath-Bearer, you carry an inner resonance the Wake cannot finish—it may scar a limb into porcelain, as it did to Valen Korr, but the calcification cannot spread to your heart. Yet as you push into the ancient vaults beneath Kal-Zir and Sol-Vara, a darker question awaits: why were the interior seals of the First Spire unlocked from within using the royal signet-tones of the mortal Founders?
