Dev Diary: Designing Three-Branch Skill Trees and Tier-4 Capstones
Why we rejected bloated 80-point passive webs in favor of twelve high-impact abilities, kinetic class resources, and a single transformative Tier-4 Ultimate capstone.

When you open a talent calculator in an MMORPG, every node you click should change how your character feels under your fingers—not just add 1% critical strike chance to a spreadsheet. At Low Chord Studio, we designed Kaelvorn’s thirteen Callings around a clear, readable structure: three thematic branches per Calling, four tiers per branch (twelve core skills in total), a shared 1.5-second global cooldown, and a single selectable Tier-4 Ultimate Capstone.
Let’s break down how that works in practice, because you can test all four unlocked trees right now in our interactive Skill-Tree Explorer.
First, every Calling is driven by an active, tactile resource gauge that reflects how they channel Resonance in battle:
Second, we wanted every build decision to matter in dungeons and raids. As you level to 60, you unlock all Tier-1, Tier-2, and Tier-3 abilities across your Calling’s three branches, giving you a complete toolkit of mitigation, utility, and throughput. However, you may equip only one Tier-4 Ultimate Capstone at a time.
Your chosen Tier-4 Capstone does two things: it grants you a fight-defining Ultimate ability (such as Valen’s Keystone of the Viaduct or Tessa’s Cinder-Crag Buster), and it directly amplifies the Tier-1 foundation skill of that same branch. When Valen equips Keystone of the Viaduct, his Tier-1 Brace the Arch also shields nearby allies for 40% damage reduction. Swap his Capstone to Sundering Cadence for a speed-run Over-Tune dungeon, and his Tier-1 Gavel of Judgement fractures enemy armor instead.
All tooltip numbers on the site are calibrated to level-60 values against a 30,000-health training dummy. Head into the Explorer and start building.
- Valen Korr (The Bell-Warden — Tank) builds Bell-Charge (0 to 100) every time he blocks a blow or absorbs damage with Brace the Arch, then spends that stored kinetic energy to ring his shield for stuns, Amber Barriers, or magnetic pulls.
- Lyra Vance (The Lantern-Weaver — Healer) weaves golden chords between party members to light five Petals of Bloom-Light, expending those Petals on instant, mobile party-wide blooms like Censer-Swing: Full Bloom or Lifebond Canopy.
- Kaelen Vos (The Sun-Blade — Melee DPS) alternates strikes between his right-hand Dawn-blade and left-hand Dusk-blade to stack Harmonic Pitch from 1 to 10, heating his sabers until he crosses the blades to detonate sonic bleeds with Cross-Blade Shatter.
- Tessa Vane-Kettler (The Foundry-Artillerist — Ranged DPS) rides her mortar’s Boiler Pressure gauge between 60% and 95% (the Red-Line Zone), where her shells ignite with molten Sun-Pitch, before venting excess steam with Vent-Valve Blast or Boiler-Jump.
