Orrisvane House
A house to return to.
Based: A fictional 28-hectare estate near Porto Covo, on Portugal’s Alentejo coast, reached by a private inland road.
In 2018, architect Iria Velorne and furniture conservator Tomé Velorne bought a neglected agricultural estate to establish their home and conservation workshop. They restored its courtyard buildings around three guest suites, retaining the orchard, washhouse and rooms large enough for a single shared table. Friends began returning for the same week each year, leaving books and unfinished conversations behind them. In 2022, the couple opened the house to introduced guests, limiting hospitality to eighteen weeks annually so their conservation practice could continue throughout the year. Orrisvane is their invented name for a household whose rooms, objects and relationships improve through continued care.
The house, people, history and offer are fictional. This profile draws on Maison Lumen’s brief, all four research documents and web research into real competitors. Files changed: none.
The flagship offer: a seven-night residence at Orrisvane, by personal invitation.
The family convenor. A business-owning couple in their late fifties books for themselves, two adult children and their partners. They already own a city home, a staffed holiday property and collections of art or furniture; their difficulty is gathering everyone without becoming the household manager. They buy a week in which someone else remembers dietary needs, bedrooms remain familiar and six people can share ordinary meals without an event programme. A family-office assistant handles the arrangements, but the invitation is addressed to the family.
The collector seeking time. A privately wealthy architect, publisher or design patron in their forties travels with a partner and occasionally another couple. They own original furniture, a substantial library and a second home, and already use specialist travel advisers. They choose Orrisvane for sustained access to a particular place and its makers: reading beside an object whose repair they watched, walking the same orchard in another season, returning to a conversation with the conservator. Their purchase is familiarity, informed by craft, without the obligations of maintaining another property.
The first four are direct alternatives for exclusive-use hospitality. Fogo Island Inn is an adjacent competitor for travellers motivated by craft and place. “What they stand for” is a strategic reading of their published offers.
| Real competitor | What they stand for | Where our client differs |
|---|---|---|
| ÀNI Private Resorts | Entire resorts for one group, with substantial included services and capacity for approximately 20–30 guests. The proposition centres on gathering family and friends with resort infrastructure. Official offer | Orrisvane serves a maximum of six in one house. Its offer centres on a recurring household relationship and a protected return week. |
| Tagomago, Ibiza | Mediterranean island possession: the island’s sole residence, five private suites and weekly exclusive rental near Ibiza. Official villa presentation | Orrisvane offers a mainland working estate, three suites and continuity with resident owners. It makes no claim to a private coastline. |
| Four Seasons Private Island Maldives at Voavah | Extensive freedom within an exclusive island: seven bedrooms, a private yacht, spa and dive centre, accommodating everything from quiet retreats to celebrations. Official island presentation | Orrisvane has a deliberately narrow scope: domestic life, conservation work and six guests. Its household calendar excludes externally produced events. |
| Islas Secas, Panama | A fourteen-island archipelago combining marine adventure, nature and tailored buyouts for families, celebrations and retreats. Official buyout offer | Orrisvane’s anchor is the inhabited house and its objects. Guests return to particular rooms and people rather than booking an expedition-led island experience. |
| Fogo Island Inn, Newfoundland — adjacent | Place-specific hospitality, local making and community benefit through a 29-room social enterprise owned by Shorefast. Official overview, makers and artisans | Orrisvane is a privately owned, exclusive-use household. It offers intimacy and continuity at six-person scale; it does not claim Fogo’s community-ownership model. |
The opening: exclusive use is established category practice. Orrisvane’s defensible position combines a contractual return privilege, an unusually small capacity and an owner’s working conservation practice. Delivering that combination requires limits on revenue and scale.
The next visit begins before departure. Returning guests receive first refusal on their equivalent seasonal week, and may retain a small box of personal books or belongings between visits. Proof a sceptic would accept: the return-option clause, a dated written offer with its price, and a guest-approved storage inventory. Preference records remain under the guest’s control.
The craft continues when the guests leave. Tomé’s atelier undertakes paid furniture conservation throughout the year; guest access follows the work already on the bench. Proof: dated condition reports, treatment photographs, materials records and redacted client invoices spanning both hospitality and closed periods. Objects are shown only with their owners’ permission.
Smallness is an operating constraint. Three suites and eighteen annual residences keep the founders directly involved in each visit. Proof: the floor plan, the six-person occupancy clause, an anonymised annual residence ledger and a named host confirmed before payment. A larger party cannot purchase an exception.
These are fictional operating commitments and their required evidence, not claims of real-world certification.
Five adjectives: warm, exact, observant, literate, unhurried.
| Do | Don’t |
|---|---|
| State a tangible detail: “Three suites open onto the courtyard.” | Substitute status language: “An unparalleled private sanctuary.” |
| Address the guest as a person: “Tell Iria who will be coming.” | Turn admission into theatre: “Only the chosen few may enter.” |
| Describe materials and care: “The chair’s original joints remain intact.” | Promise vague transformation: “Rediscover your most authentic self.” |
Sample headline 1: “A week with room around it.”
Sample headline 2: “Your place at the table, next year.”
Sample paragraph:
Breakfast waits in the courtyard. Beyond the orchard, Tomé is repairing the walnut frame of a writing chair; he will leave its old marks visible. You are welcome to visit the atelier after coffee. There are books in the west room, lunch when you would like it, and nothing else you need to arrange.

Calculated contrast on salt paper: household ink 12.64:1, olive grey 5.23:1, dried clay 5.92:1. Salt paper on estuary measures 10.07:1. Functional input boundaries use ink; pale decorative rules carry no essential information.
Typography: Newsreader, regular with occasional italic, for headings and editorial passages; Source Sans 3, weights 400–500, for body copy, navigation and practical information. Body text starts at 18px with 1.6 line spacing. Keep uppercase labels short.
Imagery and art direction: Photograph arrival at walking height: the gate, shaded passage, courtyard, then an occupied table. Alternate wide architectural plates with close studies of repaired joints, limewash, woven linen and annotated treatment records. Show people doing their work, with permission. Use natural light, honest colour and straight architectural lines. Include an estate plan with a text equivalent; distinguish the grounds from public coastal access.
Layout and identity: Generous margins, asymmetric image-and-text pairs, square image corners and flat surfaces. Develop a restrained wordmark and a small three-opening emblem derived from the courtyard elevation. Keep headlines beside photography on solid colour fields.
Motion: Native scrolling and still photography lead. Allow brief underline transitions and optional 600ms image fades, with content visible by default. Reduced-motion preferences remove transitions. Keyboard focus appears immediately.

Homepage sections, in order:
The one action: “Request an introduction.” It opens a pre-addressed email to the house, with an easily copied address alongside it. Suggested details are name, preferred season, party size and an optional introducer. An existing referral is welcome; Iria may also invite guests after direct correspondence. An introduction request creates neither a booking nor an invitation.
For the showcase, the email address must use the reserved .example domain. Build static HTML, CSS and minimal JavaScript, with relative local images and Google Fonts as the only external requests. WCAG 2.2 AA is an acceptance requirement: readable contrast, semantic headings, meaningful alt text, visible focus, generous controls and resilient mobile reflow.
